One of three months of the year to boast three separate birthstones, August babies have plenty of options to choose from. The best known of the August birthstones is peridot, a lime green gemstone that's especially notable, not just for its beauty, but for its color composition: unlike many gemstones which get their color from minerals they contain, peridot's shade comes from the structure of the stone itself.
At the other end of the color spectrum lies sardonyx, another August birthstone. Characterized by its pinkish or reddish banded appearance, sardonyx was believed by the ancient Greeks and Romans to harness bravery and many of their warriors would wear sardonyx talismans into battle.
The most recent addition to August birthstones, spinel became an emblem of August in 2016. Long coveted by royalty for their rich hues (some of the world's most famous rubies are, in fact, spinels) spinels can appear in a variety of colors, including the rich red of the Black Prince's Ruby which sits front and center on the Imperial State Crown of England.
